§ 10 — macOS SETUP

Set up Outrun on macOS

From download to your first live session — about five minutes.

RequirementsApple Silicon (M1 or newer)macOS 14 or later

Tested and verified — including all universal copilot features — on the latest macOS builds (macOS 26 and newer).

§ 1

Install

Two minutes: open the disk image and move Outrun into your Applications folder.

  1. 1
    Open the downloaded file

Find Outrun.dmg in your Downloads folder and double-click it.

    Double-click
  2. 2
    Drag to Applications

In the window that opens, drag the Outrun icon onto the Applications folder.

  3. 3
    Launch it the first time

Open Outrun from Applications. macOS shows a one-time confirmation — click Open.

    Click Open
§ 2

Your API keys

Outrun runs on your own provider keys (BYOK): Soniox for speech-to-text and OpenRouter for the AI model. Already have keys? Skip ahead to “Enter your keys in Outrun.” If not, create both below — about 5–10 minutes, paid directly to the providers.

    § 3

    Soniox — speech-to-text

Soniox transcribes speech in real time. It's pay-as-you-go: you top up a prepaid balance and pay only for what you use. We use Soniox as the example here — ElevenLabs works the same way, so pick whichever you prefer in Outrun's settings.

    Open the Soniox website
    1. 1
      Create an account

Go to console.soniox.com, click Build with API and sign in (Google is easiest). On first sign-in, fill in your basic organization details.

    2. 2
      Add a payment method

In the sidebar open Billing → Payment setup and click Add payment method. Enter your card in the Stripe form.

    3. 3
      Top up your balance

Open Billing → Overview and click Add now to make a starter deposit — for example $10. Optionally enable Autopay in Payment setup so the balance refills automatically.

A $10 deposit goes a long way — roughly 15–20 hours of live transcription.

      Add funds
    4. 4
      Create an API key

Open the API keys tab inside your project (My First Project by default) and click Create API key.

    5. 5
      Name the key

Type any name you'll recognize, then click Create API key.

      Create
    6. 6
      Copy the key

Copy the generated key and paste it into Outrun — Settings → Providers → Soniox.

Save it now — Soniox shows the key only once. If you lose it, you'll have to create a new one.

      Copy
    § 4

    OpenRouter — AI model

OpenRouter sends requests to AI models and auto-routes to the fastest provider. It's prepaid: buy credits and pay only for what you use. OpenRouter is just the example — Outrun supports other LLM providers too, so choose the one you like in the settings.

    Open the OpenRouter website
    1. 1
      Open OpenRouter

Go to openrouter.ai and click Sign Up in the top-right corner.

    2. 2
      Create an account

Continue with Google (or GitHub), or fill in the form and click Continue.

    3. 3
      Open Credits

In the sidebar, open Credits under Account.

      Open
    4. 4
      Add credits

Click Add Credits and buy a starter amount — for example $10. Optionally enable Auto Top-Up to refill automatically.

This covers the AI side. A full cycle — prep, the live call, and the post-call analysis — typically runs ~$0.5–2, depending on the model you pick.

    5. 5
      Create an API key

Open API Keys in the sidebar and click New Key in the top-right corner.

    6. 6
      Name and create

Give the key a name (leave the limits blank for unlimited) and click Create.

      Create
    7. 7
      Copy the key

Copy the generated key and paste it into Outrun — Settings → Providers → OpenRouter.

Copy the key and save it somewhere safe right away — OpenRouter shows it only once and there's no way to retrieve it later. If you lose it, you'll have to create a new one.

      Copy
    § 5

    Enter your keys in Outrun

Now open Outrun's settings, paste both keys, and pick your models.

    1. 1
      Set the transcription key (Soniox)

Open Settings → Providers. Pick Soniox Real-Time and paste your API key into the field.

Soniox handles real-time speech-to-text — the fastest option.

      Set key here
    2. 2
      Set the AI key (OpenRouter)

Still under Providers, choose OpenRouter and paste your OpenRouter API key.

      Set key here
    3. 3
      Choose your models

Set the Main and Translate model IDs, and optionally a spend-warning threshold.

For reliable results in high-stakes sessions, pick a model no weaker than Sonnet level. Lighter models can miss nuance when it matters most.

    4. Don't forget to Save

After entering your keys and models, click Save Settings — otherwise your changes won't be applied.

    § 6

    First session & macOS permissions

The first time you start a universal copilot session, macOS asks for two permissions. Grant both and you're live.

    1. 1
      Allow the microphone

When macOS asks, click Allow so Outrun can transcribe your side of the call.

      Click Allow
    2. 2
      Open screen-recording settings

Outrun also needs to see the call. On this prompt click Open System Settings.

      Open System Settings
    3. 3
      Enable Outrun

In Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording, switch the toggle next to Outrun on.

      Turn on
    4. 4
      Quit & Reopen

macOS applies screen recording after a restart. Click Quit & Reopen — Outrun relaunches ready to go.

      Quit & Reopen
    5. Clicked Don't Allow or Deny by accident?

No problem. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security, find Microphone and Screen & System Audio Recording, and switch Outrun on there. Then quit and reopen Outrun.

    § 7

    You're live

That's it — everything is set up.

    1. 1
      Start your first session

Hit record. The Transcript panel fills in real time and the Answer panel gives you live suggestions.

A full cycle (prep, live call, and analysis) usually costs only ~$0.5–2 in provider fees. Questions? Reach us at support@getoutrun.app.
